I Needed Yesterday!

Yesterday was fab!  Especially from 4:22-5:03.  And that's in the PM y'all...not the AM.

Since my 4 day hiatus, running has been ok for me.  Just ok....not bad, not great, definitely not fabulous.  My legs have felt heavy, my body has felt a bit out of shape, and I've been concentrating so much on my form and my knee that these runs have just zapped me mentally and physically.  BUT, that wasn't the case yesterday afternoon!

Kevin cam home around 4:15 so I could run.  But first I should mention the weather...A-MAZ-ING!  Somewhere around 65, partly sunny, birds chirping, people outside enjoying was spring-like!  I had 3 miles on the training schedule, but knew I was going to go for more.  I ended up running 5 miles @ 8:43 per mile (that's speedy for me).  My goal wasn't to run that fast, but once I started I just couldn't stop.  I totally negative split that run which made me feel even better (=2nd half of the run was faster than the first).  I knew if I could slow down a little (9:00-9:20), I could've put another 3-4 under my belt yesterday, which really boosted me mentally.  My knee wasn't hurting me; my body just felt great!!! It was refreshing.

I reminded myself that in running (or how about in life), there are good runs, great runs, ok runs, poor runs, and poo runs.  Yesterday I had a great run, and for that I'm thankful.

P.S.-Firm believer that God answers prayer...yes, even prayer about running.

Resting Is Hard

Last week (heck for the past 5 years) I remember thinking that I would love to have a day where I do nothing but sit on the couch all day and relax.  Boy did I eat my words.  Wednesday night after church a sore throat him me like a ton of bricks!  By Thursday afternoon is was alternating between burning and prickling pins and needles, and my body felt like it had been hit by a Mac truck.  Fun times I tell you!  So of course I went speedy quick to Quick + Care to see what was up with this throat of mine.  (Thanks dad for taking care of my boys!!!)  Alas, quick it was not, and finally after a 2 hour wait I was back in the room.  After swabbing my tonsils, it was decided that yes, I had strep...ARGH!  After a presciption for some meds, a lovely chat with the pharmacy tech about how the meds would cost me $300!!!!!!!! if my insurance didn't pay for it (thank the Lord they did!), and a trip to school to write sub plans, I finally made my way home to eat dinner and take my $338.96 medicine (that cost me nada-not even a co-pay!).

From Thursday night to Sunday morning I alternated between these two places.

(Except to squeeze in an 11 mile run on Saturday.  Yes, I realize this was a stupid idea.  But oh well, what's done is done.)  I'm telling you I did NOT want to move from either place.  Sure I got up to cook a little, help out with the boys some, do laundry, and clean a little...but considering what my normal week and weekend looks like-that's like a 90% cutback!!!  I'll have to admit I enjoyed every minute of it!!!  No, being sick is not fun.  The feeling that your throat is on fire and your body can't move a muscle is not enjoyable.  But I was finally able to rest.  R-E-S-T.  Just what the dr. ordered.  I'm happy to report that I'm enjoying this day off (I stayed in the bed until 8:30), and feel about 90% better!!!  Here's to rest, and listening to your body!!!

Let's Talk..

On Saturday I ran a race.  It was a very cold 20 some degrees with a 10 degree windchill...YIKES!  But I was determined to run, especially since I had already paid $35 and it would be my first 5K of the year.  I was super pumped to be running a F-L-A-T course, and to be running for the first time since I have felt speedy!  So I ran.  I might have lost the feeling in my toes (yes, all 10 of them) a time or two, but I finished strong...and set a PR!!!  My fastest 5K...I crossed in 25:55 (unofficial time- results are STILL NOT POSTED!!!!).

I might have caught some flack from my hubby and mom and dad for running in the butt freezing cold.  Of course I had to run Monday too- yes it was butt freezing cold them too.  When I came back in from running, I had frost on my chin.  Ok, ok...maybe I had pushed it a little.  Later that day my lungs started hurting...I thought I might be a little crazy so I checked with our nurse extraordinaire at school, and she said yes, I could actually be feeling that.  My chest hurt throughout the day.  Yes, husband and were right.  So- wa pow!  I will be a running ninja tomorrow morning!!!!!!

Moving on to Valentine's day...
Yes, I have festive feet.  Too bad I had to cover them with my shoes all day.  I thought they were fantastic!  I would like to have leggings like this :-)

My students definitely got the memo!!  They showered me with love :-)  Kevin has already devoured one box of chocolate and has hidden the rest in the cabinet.  I am proud to say that I have made it through Valentine's day and not eaten one piece of junk!!!!  Go me!

On another note...I found myself willingly in bed last night at 8:00.  Granted I didn't go to sleep right at 8-it was more like 8:16!  And I loved every stinkin' minute of it.  Tonight I laid down after dinner to just rest and took this picture and sent it to my mom.  She asked if I was sick, or if I was doing to much...and I replied no to both.  I think everyone needs down time.  Unfortunately for me, I don't have the luxury of having any down time during the day.  And when I do get home from my day job I switch hats and just go, go, go some more!!!  My mom agreed with me...every body needs rest.  Here's to finding some resting time!

I might need to chill..

Yes, as the title suggests I might need to chill.  About a lot of things, but we don't have the time for that post!  I need to chill slightly with my running schedule.  Did you all know I was training for a half-marathon...snicker, snicker.  Of course you did!  Well then you know all about my Hal Higdon marathon training schedule, and then my very own spinoff version!

Friends my days are not my's right there on black and white paper.  But here lies the problem-sometimes LIFE happens and my schedule cannot go on like planned.  9 times out of 10 there are no hitches.  But this morning there was a hitch.  See my classroom sounds like an infirmary.  I kid you not- I have 23 students, and I think 20 of them are sick with some type of cough/snotty nose/sneezy head/fever/achy body thing. (yes that is an official diagnosis).  So of course yesterday I woke up with a sore throat and stuffy nose.  Then this morning when the alarm went off I just COULDN'T pull my body out of bed.  I was tired, my nose was stuffy, and I just wasn't feeling it!!  Boo to that..I regretted it the minute I was out of the bed at my normal non-run time.  The thought of my 5 miles NOT being run today just about put me over the edge.  To top it off, it was a balmy 60 something degrees here in KY, and all day all I could think of was ARGH!!!!  I SHOULD BE RUNNING MY 5 MILES NOT TEACHING THESE CHILDREN!!!  Yes, I have a problem.

Sooooooo-I pick up my three darling children from school, shuttle them home, bark orders for them to throw on some clothes and tennis shoes, load the bikes in the truck, and head over to the water park.  My glorious plan was for them to ride their bikes (and a scooter) and me to run behind.  In my mind we would glide around, and around, and around, and around the trail...not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 TIMES (for 5 miles of course).  Yeah, that DIDN'T happen.  Shocker I know.  So we left the water park after 2, two, T-W-O times around (and they were a rough 2 times I tell ya!!!).  And it just ate my insides that I only ran 2 miles today.

Sooooooo-I planned another glorious plan, and that is to get up at 4:45 tomorrow and run a speedy 3 miles and be back by 5:30 so my hubby can leave for work.  See friends, isn't it genius?  Crazo me cannot just let it go...noooooooo.  I have to have those 5 miles under my belt.

But wait...there's more!  Saturday is supposed to be my long run day.  Check out that schedule up there-it's 11 miles.  The weather has decided that it is NOT going to cooperate, and instead of being precipitation is going to rain.  The nerve!  So I spend all day preoccupied by the fact that I didn't run 5 miles today AND it is going to rain on my long run day.  Rest assured I have a plan though-if it does rain hard all day (sprinkles don't count...I am ALL over running in sprinkles) then I will default to running on Sunday, after church, after lunch, with a semi-full belly...BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.  Not really excited about that, but not running my long run might just put me over the edge folks.
